In Lac-Saint-Jean, nature is everywhere. Numerous tourist attractions invite you to explore a vast playground in the heart of the boreal forest.

    • Le Parc le Trou de la Fée, in Desbiens promises you a memorable day surrounded by nature. A visit to the famous “Trou de la Fée” will introduce you to the only cave in Canada formed directly within the granite of the Canadian Shield and the only protected natural hibernacula (or refuge) for bats in Quebec. The immersive show, unique in Quebec, is projected onto the granite walls of a natural amphitheater measuring 7 meters high by 16 meters in diameter.

Summer in Lac-Saint-Jean… for history and culture!

Lac-Saint-Jean has a rich and unique history. The Village historique de Val-Jalbert is a must-see destination where you can explore an authentic company village preserved as it was in 1927. During the summer, take a guided tour of its convent school, general store, post office, pulp mill, and abandoned houses.

Take the time to admire the impressive Ouiatchouan Falls from one of the five lookout points, and take the cable car up to the top. Finally, on-site accommodations—including campsites, historic homes, tiny houses, and mini-cabins—as well as a restaurant are available for a complete stay.

Summer in Lac-Saint-Jean… even when it rains!

Sometimes, in the summer, rain makes an appearance. Never mind—don’t let bad weather put a damper on your vacation! There are plenty of activities that let you explore while staying dry.

    A busy winter in Lac-Saint-Jean

As soon as the region is blanketed in a beautiful layer of snow—usually in December—Lac-Saint-Jean turns into a true winter wonderland!

Winter in Lac-Saint-Jean… for the ice villages!

In January, when Lake Saint-Jean and the rivers are frozen solid, ice villages begin to take shape. In Saint-Félicien, the Village boréal is set up on the Ashuapmushuan River, offering the whole family a chance to enjoy winter fun with a lively program of activities, an ice rink, a hockey rink, and play structures.

    • Le Village sur glace de Roberval is located right on Lake Saint-Jean. In addition to the ice rink, you can rent fat bikes, skates, and even a prospector’s tent to take a quick break with a cup of hot chocolate in hand!

    Winter in Lac-Saint-Jean… for snowmobiling!

    • With its abundant snowfall, Lac-Saint-Jean is a renowned destination for snowmobiling. La Passerelle du 49e is an ATV and snowmobile trail located north of Lac-Saint-Jean, primarily north of the 49th parallel. Stretching 236 km and featuring several bridges spanning rivers, it’s an exceptional route for exploring the boreal forest.
    • Along the way, plan to stop at one of the many snowmobile lodges, including Otis Nature in Lamarche. In addition to enjoying a gourmet dining experience at its restaurant, you can spend the night in a cozy and welcoming cabin.

    A Colorful Autumn in Lac-Saint-Jean

Although the weather starts to cool off in September, there are still a few beautiful sunny days ahead. Fall is perfect for outdoor activities, but also for cozy indoor activities!

Fall in Lac-Saint-Jean… for the colors!

In early October, the landscape undergoes a dramatic transformation. This is when the trees take on their most beautiful colors: vibrant yellow, fiery orange, and “ketchup-flavored potato chip” red.

    • For an inspiring autumn walk, head to the l’Arboretum de la Presqu’île Croft, in Métabetchouan-Lac-à-Lac-Croix. It’s the perfect place to add leaves from a wide variety of tree species to your herbarium.

    What about spring in Lac-Saint-Jean?

Starting in March, spring begins to thaw. We won’t sugarcoat it: April can be pretty muddy—and even rainy. But don’t let that discourage you! It’s also the perfect time for cultural outings.

    • Did you know that the Musée Louis-Hémon has undergone major changes this year? In fact, Quebec’s first literary museum has moved to the former Saint-Édouard Church in the village of Péribonka. The new permanent exhibition, “Péribonka: At the Source of Words,” will immerse you in the world of French-Canadian literature as you discover the secrets of literary creation.

Finally, during the months of May and June, once Lake Saint-Jean has finally thawed, nature comes back to life. Soon, the sky fills with thousands of migrating snow geese and Canada geese. Bordered by extensive farmland, the municipality of Métabetchouan-Lac-à-la-Croix is ideally situated for observing them. The beach at the centre touristique Le Rigolet, on the shores of Lac Saint-Jean, is a prime spot to admire these large birds as they move between land and water throughout the day. Access is free and available at all times.

Such is the cycle of the seasons at Lac-Saint-Jean! No matter the time of year, you’ll find plenty of experiences to enjoy. Have a wonderful stay in our corner of the country!
