In fact, many rivers and places around the lake bear Montagnais names.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here is a glossary of Montagnais words you\u2019ll come across during your stay at the lake.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Kuei \u2013\u00a0<\/strong>Hello in Innu.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Pekuakami<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 The name given to Lake Saint-Jean means \u201cshallow lake,\u201d \u201cflat lake,\u201d or \u201clake with flat shores.\u201d P\u00e2k means \u201cshallow\u201d or \u201cflat,\u201d and kami means \u201cwater\u201d or \u201clake.\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Les Pekuakamiulnuatsh<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 Pekuakami First Nation (Lac Saint-Jean)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Nehlueun<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 The Ilnu language of Mashteuiatsh<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Ilnu\/Ilunatsh<\/strong>\u00a0(singular\/plural), a Native American name for the Montagnais, meaning \u201cMan\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Mashteuiatsh<\/strong>\u2013 Where there is a headland, also known as Pointe-Bleue. For the Ilunatsh, this headland was long a gathering place and one of the busiest thoroughfares. Even today, Ilnu culture is proudly represented there.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Rivi\u00e8re Ashuapmushuan<\/strong>, a place where you can hear moose<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Manitou<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 The Spirit of the Spirit \/ The Higher Being.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>M\u00e9tabetchouan :<\/strong>The stream flows into the lake<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Mistassini :<\/strong>\u00a0large rock. Cree place name MISHTA: large, rocky outcrop, boulder.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Rivi\u00e8re Mistouc:<\/strong>From the mountains, a piece of wood<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Ouananiche<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 Means \u201clost\u201d or \u201cout of place.\u201d<br>A fish native to this region, the trout is believed to have evolved into the ouananiche following the retreat of saltwater.
