Alma covers a total area of 195.59 km², 15% of which is urbanized. The city borders Lake Saint-Jean and is crossed by two rivers, the Grande Décharge and the Petite Décharge, which merge to form the Saguenay River. With a population of over 30,000, Alma is the largest city in the Lac-Saint-Jean-Est RCM.
