What to bring for your bike ride around the lake

Are you planning to cycle around Lac Saint-Jean this summer? Here’s what you’ll need to bring!

Whether this is your first bike trip around Lac Saint-Jean or your umpteenth time doing it, it’s always a good idea to keep a few basics in mind before setting out. David Lecointre, executive director of the Véloroute des Bleuets and an experienced cyclist, offers these tips.

What to pack for a trip around the lake

Cycling trips usually mean packing light, but certain clothes and/or accessories are still essential. Here are the must-have items to pack when you come cycling in Lac-Saint-Jean.

    • A windbreaker
    • Rain gear
    • A neck warmer
    • Sunscreen
    • A swimsuit for afternoons by the water after biking
    • A sweatshirt for evenings by the fire

    The Cyclist’s Kit

Since you can never be too careful when it comes to flat tires, mechanical breakdowns… or a sudden hunger pang, here’s the kit every cyclist should always bring along on a ride.

    • A pair of disposable gloves
    • 3 tire levers
    • A new inner tube
    • A CO2 cartridge or a pump
    • A mini multi-tool kit
    • A $20 bill (for a beer after the ride or to patch a flat tire)
    • A energy bar (in case you get hungry)

All that’s left is to wish you a safe journey!

My favorite sections of the Blueberry Bike Trail

It was in 2005 that I first discovered the Blueberry Bike Trail while helping to create the “River Network” between Albanel and Girardville. What I appreciate most about the Maria-Chapdelaine RCM are the panoramic views of the waterfalls on the mighty Mistassini and Mistassibi rivers. In September, the changing colors of the blueberry fields offer a brief moment of pure joy.

In 2007, when I became Executive Director of the Véloroute des Bleuets, I was living in Saint-Félicien and loved cycling toward Roberval along the Ashuapmushuan River all the way to Saint-Prime. I would then continue my ride along the lake with stunning views in Mashteuiatsh, finally stopping to enjoy a soft-serve ice cream dipped in Belgian chocolate at the Roberval marina.

Since 2018, I’ve lived in Alma; the town’s central location lets me cycle north to Saint-Henri-de-Taillon, and I never miss the turnoff onto the Saint-Cœur-de-Marie bike path, which allows me to ride safely along the Grande Décharge River.

When I ride southwest, I particularly enjoy the area around the Rio Tinto dams and the islands of Alma and Saint-Gédéon for its many small hills. The section between Métabetchouan–Lac-à-la-Croix and Desbiens is perfect for relaxing family outings and stops at Rigolet Beach.

    Mountain bike trails to explore

Thrill-seekers will also find plenty to enjoy, as Lac-Saint-Jean offers magnificent mountain bike trails.

In 2003, I opened a mountain bike rental shop in Girardville, and since then I never miss an opportunity to go for a ride with friends on the trails of the Tobo-ski Club, Domi-ski, Banc de sable, Mont Lac-Vert, or the Parc d’une rive à l’autre.

As a true cyclist of Belgian origin, I usually end my rides with a good beer from our local microbreweries.

    Enjoy your ride, and cheers,

    David, the Belgian Blueberry.

Lac-Saint-Jean is a must-visit tourist destination. Every village you pass through is brimming with local products, friendly people, lush farms, and epic stories. Tony Paré, owner of Attractions Boréales and an avid motorcyclist, invites you to hop on your bike and set off on a 260-kilometer expedition around the stunning Lac-Saint-Jean.

    From west to east

Our tour begins in Saint-Félicien, home to the famous Zoo sauvage and a perfect stop for wildlife enthusiasts. Continuing on our way, we arrive in Mashteuiatsh, where you’re sure to receive a warm welcome. The Mashteuiatsh Native American Museum awaits you with knowledgeable guides who will tailor their explanations to your interests. If you happen to be in the area in mid-July, you may have the opportunity to attend the Pow-Wow, the Great Gathering of First Nations. Before hitting the road again, stop by Saint-André-du-Lac-Saint-Jean (also known as Saint-André de l’épouvante) for a picnic by the waterfall.

Hit the road again and drive to Saint-Gédéon, a charming village that will instantly make you feel like you’re on vacation. The marina offers a magnificent view where you can enjoy a wide variety of local products. Treat yourself to a craft beer from the Microbrasserie du Lac, a delicious cheese from the Fromagerie chez Médard, or fresh bread from their bakery, or indulge in one of the village’s many restaurants. From Alma, continue heading east to reach the village of Péribonka. This is a very popular stop for motorcyclists. You’ll soon meet fellow enthusiasts who, like you, have set out on the Lac-Saint-Jean tour. Take the opportunity to chat and exchange stories with them; you’ll likely make some wonderful discoveries. The tour of the lake wouldn’t be complete without a stop at the beach. Vauvert Beach offers 7 km of fine sand and a breathtaking view of the majestic Lac-Saint-Jean. You’re sure to be charmed by this picturesque landscape, where it’s a pleasure to stop and relax.

Heading a little north, you’ll pass through Dolbeau-Mistassini, home to the famous “Halte du Bleuet.” There, you’ll find motorcycle-friendly accommodations and information on local attractions, such as Mahikan Park for wolf watching or the 11th Falls Dam.

The lake tour ends in Normandin, just before returning to Saint-Félicien, where you absolutely must stop to stretch your legs. The hiking trails at Chute à l’ours reveal the beauty of the boreal forest, a spectacular way to end your getaway.

The Long Circuit: The perfect snowmobile tour of Lac-Saint-Jean

The snowmobile industry is fascinating and thriving. Lac-Saint-Jean has long been a cradle of this industry and remains a promising destination for enthusiasts of this unique winter sport and recreational activity.

    • 11 snowmobile clubs
    • Plenty of places to rent equipment
    • Numerous rest stops
    • A variety of lodging options, some of which offer heated garages
    • 3,800 km of well-maintained and clearly marked trails
    • Crossings throughout every MRC
    • Snow, snow, and more snow!

While some argue over who invented poutine and where it originated, Lac-Saint-Jean has no trouble at all being hailed as the ultimate snowmobiling paradise, year after year. Its vast territory, perfect winter temperatures, and warm welcome are all factors that make it a mecca recognized by both novice and seasoned snowmobilers alike.

Whether on trails or off-trail, the snow-laden trees and fields stretching as far as the eye can see turn snowmobile trips and days into adventures that are as athletic as they are scenic—even contemplative.

The snow-covered vastness is best savored on a snowmobile, and there is no doubt about this—neither for the locals who know the area well nor for winter vacationers from afar. There are plenty of outings, especially when you can count on favorable weather conditions bringing plenty of sunshine and snow, as well as a trail system designed to delight passionate snowmobilers.

Exploring Lac-St-Jean by snowmobile: ideal weather conditions

Just the mention of the 300 centimeters of snow that fall each year is enough to set any snowmobiler’s imagination ablaze. The inspiring landscapes, the invigorating cold, the picturesque settings, the well-maintained trails, and the vast expanse stretching as far as the eye can see never fail to delight travelers and enthusiasts of this pastime, for which the lake is renowned.

The perfect long-distance trail for true snowmobile enthusiasts

The Lac-Saint-Jean Omer Harvey Loop, stretching 408 kilometers…

408 kilometers without ever retracing your steps—exciting, isn’t it? That’s what makes this trail so appealing, and it’s sure to become a favorite among adventure lovers. From plains to mountainous terrain, and sometimes along the lake’s edge, this majestic trail is the envy of all. From the great outdoors to more urban settings, the range of lodging and dining options will also keep visitors’ schedules full.

Among the other standout routes are the Passerelle du 49e, stretching nearly 240 kilometers, and the Circuit de la Couronne, which winds through the Domaine-du-Roy RCM for 200 kilometers.

    Who is Omer Harvey?

The man, who turned 80 last year, is a true pioneer of snowmobiling in Quebec and has played a major role in promoting the sport. He was initially part of a group that helped establish snowmobile clubs, and later, in the 1970s, he served as a regional representative for the Fédération des clubs de motoneigistes du Québec. He went on to become its vice president during the 1980s and 1990s. During that same decade, he was part of a delegation tasked with exploring snowmobiling among our European neighbors. In the early 2000s, he traveled across the province with other snowmobilers to record geolocation data for the trails. Having trained several trail patrol members throughout his impressive career, it’s safe to say that this winter sport has always been a part of his life; in fact, even today, you can still spot him crisscrossing the many trails, dressed all in white!

    A circuit relaunched in 2021

The trail had existed for quite some time but had fallen into disuse over the years. Wishing to bring back the trail bearing this name so well known in Lac-Saint-Jean, the Lac-Saint-Jean snowmobile clubs joined forces to give it a new lease on life. As a result, the trail now has all the necessary signage so that snowmobilers can enjoy it happily and safely.

    Departure from St-Félicien

Maps and driving apps often suggest starting the tour in Saint-Félicien. In addition to the Saint-Félicien Wildlife Park and the Domaine des Trois-Îles, which offers unique accommodations in its colorful, beautifully appointed “coolboxes,” the town invites visitors to explore its local flavors, including the La Chouape Microbrewery, La Maison du Bleuet, the Fromagerie de la Ferme des Chutes, and the Boulangerie Moisson d’Or.

A first step into the great outdoors

This pristine wilderness, affectionately known as “Le Haut du Lac,” offers scenery you won’t find anywhere else. Almost desert-like in some places, the route takes you through Girardville, among other towns.

We recommend the Chute à l’Ours Campground, which offers dining and lodging in wooden cabins and welcomes a large number of snowmobilers every year.

A stop at the Domaine du Ranch de Sainte-Jeanne-d’Arc is also recommended. This is a unique snowmobile lodge that will charm nature lovers.

And why not combine snowmobiling and fishing with some ice fishing on the Péribonka River at the Vacances Vauvert site, which is accessible by snowmobile throughout the summer season!

The second half of the route takes you closer to the towns and villages around the lake

As you head back down toward Saint-Henri-de-Taillon—taking a deep breath of fresh air along the way—you’ll pass through several towns and villages, rest stops, and (yet again!) scenic views.

From Alma to the end of the loop, you’ll discover the tourist lake

As the seat of the Lac-Saint-Jean Est RCM, Alma is the most urban center in the Lac-Saint-Jean region. Nevertheless, it is just as welcoming and imbued with the same warmth and friendliness found in the various towns around the lake. It offers four fatbike and mountain bike centers, nearly 100 gourmet stops, and several microbreweries, including Riverbend and Lac Saint-Jean.

Finding a place to stay during the trip

After a day of snowmobiling, with your cheeks flushed from the fun and the fresh air, there’s nothing better than a comfortable night’s sleep in a well-deserved place to rest. Here are a few suggestions for places to stay during your visit to Lac-Saint-Jean.

    See accommodation options around Lac-St-Jean

    Rest stop

A rest stop, often run by a snowmobile club, an organization, a municipality, or a private individual, provides a place to stop and restock supplies. As a seasonal stopover, rest stops are a common sight in the magnificent “Land of Blueberries.” In fact, they can be found throughout the region in as many formats and styles as you could wish for.

Among them are the Buttes de St Félicien rest stop, the Chute-à-l’Ours rest stop in Normandin, the Lac-à-Jim Resort in Saint-Thomas-Didyme, the former recreation center in Notre-Dame-de-Lorette, the Domaine du Ranch de Sainte-Jeanne-D’Arc, and the Au Clocher snowmobile stop in Saint-Stanislas.

A few restaurants along the way

It’s not just at the rest stops that you can enjoy a good meal—there’s great food all around the lake. Among other places, we highly recommend the brand-new Microbrasserie Bercée in Hébertville and the restaurant Le Rigolet in Métabetchouan.

    Fun activities for the road

It’s always a good idea to take a break for a few hours during a day of snowmobiling to enjoy a fun or educational activity. In Alma, you can immerse yourself in a whole new world at the Escaparium du Lac, a fully immersive escape room. The Odyssée des Bâtisseurs is a must-see cultural attraction in Alma.

    Fantastic winter sports in Lac-St-Jean

A snowmobile ride might make you fall in love with the lake, but the lake is sure to make you fall in love with snowmobiling—whether you’re here for a short or long stay, with friends or as a couple!

A culinary tour, a fascinating tour

By Yvan Martineau, cycling journalist, tourism and outdoor activities correspondent for the program “Les week-ends de Paul Houde,” cycling tour guide, and media ambassador for the Véloroute des Bleuets

A Culinary Tour Along the Véloroute des Bleuets

I loved it! I absolutely loved taking part in the very first Gourmet Tour on the Véloroute des Bleuets, that famous cycling route and major tourist attraction in the Lac-St-Jean region! The participants thoroughly enjoyed it too. Especially since we took our time (I’m exaggerating a bit), stretching the fun out over four days. At every stop with local producers, the cycling tourists asked questions, showed great interest in our hosts, and were fascinated when they talked about the origins and mission of their family businesses or their attachment to their animals. And what can I say about the pride they expressed when describing their products! The Gourmet Tour is an experience with the potential to become a tradition.

From the very first pedal strokes as we set off from Alma, the group I was guiding for the Ekilib cycling tour agency was already soaking up that vacation vibe, with sections on bike paths, a first visit to a marina, and the crossing of the Grande Décharge aboard the Le Maligneau water shuttle.

Vergers de Velours, à St-Henri de Taillon

And the first stop on the itinerary was Vergers de Velours in St-Henri-de-Taillon, where the co-owner herself, Bianca Voyer, came out to greet us. What a determined woman! She and her team have racked up numerous accolades. In 2018 alone, they won seven medals for their beverages made from berry spirits (they own 2,000 fruit trees) at an international wine competition in New York State. The shop also makes foodies like me drool with its displays of homemade chocolates, chive blossom vinegar, green tomato ketchup, pickled cucumbers, and more.

    Cycling from St-Henri to Dolbeau-Mistassini

We hop back on our bikes. The weather is gorgeous as we ride for miles right along the lake’s edge in Pointe-Taillon National Park (a Sépaq park). The view is spectacular. Several of us remark, “I didn’t realize the lake was this big.” At the end of the trail, there’s nowhere to go. It’s a dead end. After a swim in the shallow, warm water for dozens of meters, we board another water shuttle that drops us off on the other shore, in Péribonka. The charming forest sections take us to Sainte-Jeanne-d’Arc and then to Dolbeau-Mistassini. The power of the elements at the Chute des Pères is breathtaking. People often talk about Lake Saint-Jean, but in my view, we too often forget that the region is home to large, impressive rivers with strong currents.

    Microbrasserie Le Coureur des Bois

Once we arrived at the hotel, we headed out to one of the region’s microbreweries, Le Coureur des Bois. We received another warm welcome there, where one of the owners took great pleasure in treating our group to a tasting experience. This “microbrewery” crafts 26 varieties of wild beers inspired by the region!

Just like the day before, we have about 60 kilometers ahead of us on Day 2 to reach St-Félicien. A gourmet stop at l’économusée Les Délices du Lac-St-Jean, another family-owned business. I’ve been a big fan of their wild blueberry and maple jams for a long time. The management shows us the wide range of products they make, such as wild blueberry tea and wild blueberry BBQ sauce. “Another deeply moving moment because we get to meet people who love what they do and are proud to share their knowledge,” one of the participants tells me.

From Albanel, we head next to Chute à l’Ours in Normandin, then on to “St-Fé.” The diverse landscapes, farmland, and forests make for a delightful journey. Later, what a pleasure it was for me to see the Bouchard family again—from Bouchard Artisan Bio—who gave us a royal welcome. Valérie, with great kindness, recounted the roots of this family of local producers who have been based in Lac for five generations, describing and offering samples of their famous cheeses and yogurts. My clients ask questions and show their curiosity. Carl (Bouchard) has been standing off to the side for 30 minutes when, finally, he joins the conversation. And off we go again… Our group is touched by the sincere devotion these farmers have for their craft and their cows.

And then came the request: could we visit the barn? Sure! Imagine about fifteen cycling tourists, in cycling shorts and clipless shoes, wandering through the aisles, enchanted by the sight. And especially by the baby calves.

Truly, such warm, friendly people—the extended Bouchard family!

We park our bikes in St-Félicien

Since time had flown by, we missed the planned aperitif at the micro-brasserie La Chouape in St-Félicien—which is also well-known—and headed instead to dinner at a divine spot I hadn’t yet discovered despite my fifteen or so trips along the Véloroute des Bleuets: the restaurant O Pied marin. The menu draws inspiration from local specialties, so some opt for the parmesan fondue with blueberry chutney, others for the flank steak with blueberry sauce, and still others for… poutine… with blueberries! It’s also divine because the restaurant sits on the banks of the Ashuapmushuan River, next to a marina, with a view of the sunset. Magnificent!

Day 3: A Day of Culture and Cheese

Ekilib, Destination Lac-St-Jean, and the Véloroute des Bleuets recommended stops like these every day as we cycled along, notably at Fromagerie Perron and Boulangerie et Fromagerie Médard. And at the musée amérindien de Mashteuiatsh, which everyone takes the time to visit on Day 3. It is in this area, in fact, that the Véloroute returns to run alongside Lac St-Jean, charming us all over again. One scene among many: in Roberval, picnicking in a park on the shores of Piékouagami (the name given to Lake St-Jean by the Indigenous peoples), where the lake takes on the appearance of an inland sea, two of the participants relax, sitting in the sand, barefoot in the water. They chat. They appreciate the calm and the splendor of the surroundings. A moment of communion with nature.

A Bit of History in Val Jalbert

But we had to hop back on our bikes to head to the historic village of Val-Jalbert and get a taste of our ancestors’ way of life, spending the late afternoon and the night there. How charming—these old houses, their rooms furnished with antiques, tools, and artifacts from days gone by, and streets lined with wooden sidewalks just like in the John Wayne Westerns. The high waterfall is impressive, transforming in the evening under lights of various colors. When it comes to dining, Val-Jalbert offers one of the best restaurants in the region, located in the old stone mill. The decor and atmosphere are sublime!

On the morning of the last day, some of the most breathtaking natural viewpoints along the Véloroute des Bleuets on the lake draw gasps of wonder and prompt photo stops. It’s also wonderful to cycle through Desbiens, Métabetchouan-Lac-à-la-Croix, and St-Gédéon before heading back to Alma via another water shuttle to return to La Maison du vélo.

    A wonderful gourmet bike tour

This gourmet tour was made even more memorable by the wide-open spaces, the natural attractions, and the warm hospitality of the proud residents and producers of the Lac-St-Jean region. It was also enhanced by the quality of services along the Véloroute, as well as by Ekilib’s support—including luggage transport, healthy snacks, and the van and trailer that follow behind in case of need, and more. Finally, it was made even more special by the camaraderie that quickly developed within the group—groups that came alive with the rhythm of their shared passion for a common hobby.

As you can imagine, with such a positive experience, I hope the Gourmet Tour becomes a tradition. Likewise, I wholeheartedly wish this enriching human experience upon as many cycling tourists as possible.

Check out other cycling attractions on our website!

*This culinary tour was created by Destination Lac-St-Jean and the Véloroute des Bleuets, in collaboration with the Ekilib agency, for which the author, journalist Yvan Martineau, leads tours all over the world.
